My '96 328i was leatherette, and I couldn't get any dealer to trade me out of it on a new 99 328i.

I had to go thru all the end-of-lease hassles and just get rid of it (btw, the car was in perfect condition, $0 extra damages owed by me).

Explanation was used car buyers wanted leather, and heated seats (mine had neither).

YMMV. (and i GOT the leather this time!)
