In Reply to: Dealer stated oil change is $120 because the oil posted by is expensive. BS? Chris on November 23, 1999 at 18:13:07:

: : BMW does not make oil. The OEM it from an oil company. In the case of the 5w40 synthetic, they buy it from Valvoline. As far as I know it is the exact same as the 5w40 Synpower you can buy retail (if you can find someone that stocks that weight, which is not common).

: : : Let's put it this way, if the BMW designed oil is really much longer lasting than Mobil-1, (and sells for cheaper as I understand), they would have spun-off that division to get into the oil business.

: : : : I spoke to a service person at Allison BMW about getting my oil changed early. He stated that the oil used is a special synthetic BMW oil designed for long life. Supposedly it is different that your standard synthetics such as Mobil 1 since it is made for "long life". He also mentioned something about the particles don't set at the bottom which is why you can wait until the 15K mile oil change.

: : : : This sounds like a bunch of BS. Anyone have thoughts or knowledge in this area?
