I copied this of the E39 board but was wondering if the navigation computer on the E46 can be upgraded...

Just found out how to get into the diagnostic (read "secret") settings screen on my '99 528i Standard Sound / Navi! It turns out to be very easy, all you have to do is press the "Menu" button, select the "Set" option, click the turning knob and once you are in the "Set" screen, press and hold the "Menu" button for 8 seconds. All kinds of interesting stuff can be found then! Most of it you want to leave alone, but I found a few bits I might play around with. Also, contrary to my conviction so far that the TV functionality was completely unavailable on US cars, I am told that the capability actually does exist! The thing is that it's only available with the old OS shipped with the old Navi MK I, and the feature has been permanently disabled / concealed in the new OS. There apparently is some sort of a TV tuner in all cars but it only works with satelite TV. I don't have more deatails yet. The OS upgrades come on CD's distributed to the dealer and they can upgrade the OS by popping the OS CD into the Navi CD-ROM in the trunk, and uploading it into the on board computer. I am not sure if it gets stored on a Hard Disk (I doubt it) or really large EPROM (sounds even weirder), but I am happy to find out that upgrades are possible.
