I believe that the old 3 series had that wheel on it for the sports package- I know that the M3 did. However, I disagree with you about the E46 3-spoke wheel. I think it's a great wheel. It has a very thick rim (compared to the cars I've previously driven, that is), and feels EXTREMELY solid in your hands. It's thin, but it's very nice. Have you seen the 3-spoke wheel in the A4 sports package? I think that one's great too, and the 3series's is very similiar.
Oh yeah, and the 3series sport wheel DOES have radio and cruise control controls on it too.
