BMW designed different final drive ratios between the 3 and the 8 with a stick. This allows the smaller engine to produce similar performance for US style driving. However, withautomatic, the final drive ratio is the same. This causes the 323 to be much slower with auto. Does anyone know why this was done? Had they provided the same difference in final drive, it would eliminate the issue I (and probably many others) have that with auto, you almost have to get the 328 for decent performance.
