A few years ago, GM gave an unsolicited bid to buy BMW outright. Obviously, it was declined, but GM is still interested. GM's CEO is going to retire in a few years (GM has a mandatory retirement age of 65, and he's close to that, and he might want to get out a little early), and maybe he wants acquiring BMW to be the last thing that he does.
One thing I think would happen if Ford buys BMW(and I know I'm gonig to get burned for saying this) is that quality control will improve, and that BMW will get a huge boost. Prices would probably also drop, since BMW would benefit from Ford's incredible buying power. Jaguar is a perfect example. Jaguars, according to the latest JD Powers reports (yeah, I know that some people don't think that JD Powers is crooked) have one of the lowest problems per 100 cars. Also, the new S-Type wouldn't have existed if Ford didn't buy Jaguar, and the upcoming X400 would not either.
I think there are a lot of people who refuse buy any American car, but American cars aren't bad- in fact, there are many great American cars. The Focus is a great car, as are the Camaro, Mustang, Intrepid, 300M, Viper, Contour, and Lincoln LS. I don't agree with those who slam American cars as low quality pieces of crap, because they aren't.
Oh yeah, before you ask why I have a BMW if I like American cars so much, the answer is that I like this car alot.
