I believe your right, the 328i comes with the tallest gearing of any 3 series, if it we to have 3.15 or 3.25 gearing it would be considerably quicker and lose little on the top end.
I waiting for BMW to provied new gear ratio the previous gears won't fit (as they would every other model).
3.25 gearing would make a 323i about as quick as a 328i...its just a mater of engine torque time gear ratios...I have an excellent spread sheet I worked out for my 328i, if interested.

: I think you are looking at it wrong. I believe the 328i ratio of 2.93 is the way it is so that it didn't compete with the remaining '99 E36 M3. The 328i manual was is hindered by it's ratio. I theorize that you may see the 328/330 get a different ratio once the E46 M3 is out. Keeping the manual 328/330 a full second slower than the M3, and a full second faster than the 323/325. Just a theory.
