: This is exactly how "black ice" is formed: When the ground is still at a below-freezing temperature and the air is slightly warmer. Typically this will happen in early-morning but could happen at any time during the day.

: The moisture in the warmer-air comes in contact with the below-freezing ground and freezes, forming an oh-so-thin layer of ice that you may or may not be able to detect visually.
