E46 ROOF RACK (archive)

Does anyone have experience with the roof rack for the E46 that mounts to the covered studs on the roof (from BMW or THULE). Can it acomodate a mountain bike? A kayak? Is there alot of wind noise? Is a faring available or necessary. An information would be greatly appreciated.
