I own a E36 328i and an Acura Integra. At the 'Taste of Lexus'(they have some pretty nice cars too!) last summer, I drove both the TL and the E46 328i. The BMW is much more solid feeling, but you'll never notice if all you do is motor down the freeway with the stereo on. So if the car is just transportation, then the TL is comfortable and smooth, and you will like it as you motor along with traffic. It is almost invisible to the driver.
The BMW makes you feel like you are in control and connected to the road very accurately. The power is there when you ask for it. You'll wonder why there are so many people driving so slowly in the fast lane.
One caution: The Acura people understand service. They pamper me, even as an Integra owner. With BMW, the service levels annoy me sometimes. It's not bad, but they're not much concerned about me as a customer. For example it usually takes me two or three calls to get a service appointment for my BMW. For the Acura, it's always one call - no matter what I want done or when I want it. I miss that with BMW.
