Fewer on off cycles means longer life.
Two possible failure modes: 1) sputtering of electrode material onto the inside of the envelope so the less light gets out (slow, "soft" failure), 2) depending on how the things are sealed, gases can diffuse through the envelope to "poison" the discharge, reducing light output.
