: 24/3/2000 - Car giant Ford is believed to have made a formal offer to
: buy BMW for �10 billion, according to reports from insiders working
: at the German manufacturer.

: They warn the company's portfolio would be divided up between Ford
: and Volkswagen, with the blue oval getting the lion's share of BMW,
: and with Rolls-Royce and Mini being sold to VW. This would let the
: Americans get their hands on another luxury marque for the Premier
: Automotive Group, which already contains such great names as
: Aston Martin and Jaguar. Rolls-Royce would be re-united with Bentley
: under VW ownership. Neither company will comment on the reports.
