I bought my '00 328i off the lot; it just happened to have everything I wanted on the options list. Plus, I couldn't stand the thought of that long wait...
But having had the car for several months now, here's what I would do different:
First, here are my car specs:
'00 328i
Orient Bule/Grey
Premium Package
Harman Kardon Stereo
CD Changer
Heated Seats
Manual Transmission
with:
Univeral transmitter (installed myself, easy)
BBS RK 16x8 Wheels
Bridgestone SO2 Pole Positions
BMW Alarm (dealer installed)
Although the Sport Package seats are a little tight for my big butt (6'0'' - 260 lbs), most folks really like this option. The 17 inch wheels and suspension in this option are very popular; I like the 16's for the slightly more comfortable ride, albeit with some compromise in "edge of the envelope" handling. If money is not tight, I recommend both the Sport and Premium packages. I really wish I had the navigation system, it seems like a valuable option despite the high cost. I love the moonroof and other goodies that the premium package contains. I like the HK stereo option - it's significantly better than stock, although many folks would prefer that it approach the quality of an aftermarket stereo for the price. For me, it's a good addition.
As for leasing, I've never been able to justify over outright purchase due to my high annual mileage. Jon Shafer would be a better source of advice on that though...
