Question on cruise control... (archive)

I have a '00 323i (built 6/99) and am wondering why the cruise control increments/decrements in kilometers/hour. Why doesn't BMW use MPH units to calibrate the cruise on cars sold in the USA? Are they still trying to convert us over to the metric system? Can a dealer re-program this?
Granted this is a minor point but I'm curious. Also, is KmPH the standard unit used in Canada?
