BMW does NOT use water based paint. No such thing for cars. The finish is technically not a paint, but an electrostatically applied and thermally bonded resin.

I'm not aware of any huge amount of problems with this finish. It is potentially a far superior finish in terms of durability than what it replaced. It is harder, reaches places normally missed with traditional spray applications, and requires no "curing".

It is also environmentally friendly, as all of the powdered resin left over in the process is reclaimed, reprocessed, and reused. Furthermore, no solvents used, so no evaporation into the atmosphere.


The "water-based" term may have got started by someone confusing the term "solvent-free", assuming this would mean "water". It is not.
