ductwork. I have had some luck in turning off the a/c a few minutes before shutting off the car so that the excessive moisture is purged. If the smell is persistent, I've heard of people spraying an aerosol disinfectant into the air intake to kill off the bacteria, but don't know how it this would affect the BMW filtration system.
