Our understanding is that the BMW StarTac has special programming that integrates it with the steering wheel controls and that the other Motorola StarTacs cannot be integrated or reprogrammed to allow the BMW functionality.

Another contributor had the phone installed in his vehicle and was very pleased(scroll down a couple of days to see his post). It's expensive though - $595 for the phone and $595 for the install kit.
