In the past several years, I've owned an E36 325i and a 2000 Z3 2.3. My 323i is FAR superior to both of them.

The car is unbelievably smooth and comfortable, while being aggressive and nimble all at the same time.

I have the sport package, and I can't figure out for the life of me why people feel the need to spend $10-15,000 more for an M3. Where, other than a racetrack, are you going to go around corners faster than when you're driving a 323i? And would you take a car in the high $40,000s racing?

Keep an eye out for upcoming issues of Automobile Magazine- they're going to have a detailed summary of the long-term test of their 323i, and so far their preliminary reports (updates on their journey to 30,000 miles) are nothing short of glowing.
