How do you remove the gear knob. (archive)

I have a 2000 323I auto with a timber gear selector. I wanted to remove the gear knob to allow greater access under the console. I tried twisting it without success but now the knob is able to be turned just under quarter turn. I think I stuffed something up. Can anyone help me on how to stop the slight movement in the gear knob and how to remove it. Thank
