CAI is heatshield and open, cone-style air filter.

A "regular" K&N will just replace the stock air filter, it won't be open air, it'll just go in the factory filter compartment.

Yes, you'll get some of the same benefit, you'll get increased airflow. You won't get the cold-air benefit that a CAI gives.

With my K&N and RD exhaust, I notice a difference under hard acceleration. Doesn't matter if it's low or high RPMs (gotta love that flat torque curve).
