They're not likely to cause damage to the motor. (Unless you also install a lightweight flywheel, then you can break the crankshaft.)

However, there is some speculation about an underdrive pulley wearing other parts faster. (This would be pumps, and alternator.) It is also possible that your battery would go dead sooner. (If alternator is being underdriven.)

I think if you had an underdrive pulley and one of the effected systems failed, BMW would most try not to honor warranty on that item.
