Wait a while if you can't afford it. My new 323 was exactly $39,759.57 which turns out to be ~28% of my present income. Probably somewhere less than 35% will put you in a position where you can easily afford the car with no buyers remorse and therefore love it and enjoy it that much more. When I graduated from college I was making about $40k/yr. I waited a little while (about a year) and decided my reward to myself was my dream car: a BMW. I couldn't afford a new BMW so I bought a used one. It was a wonderful decision. I'm now a little more than five years out of college and just bought my first new car - the 323Ci.

Moral of the story: don't get in over your head, but work hard for the things you enjoy in life. If you want a Bimmer, but can't afford a new one at the moment, search around for a good used one. Wait until you are financially ready, and then buy new.
