finally felt it was ok to go for the only car we wanted to own, bmw baby. i was all satisfied with getting a cpo 97 3series until i started researching in magazines and this message board. i got sold on everyone chatting about more power, newer models, and how "my car can beat up your car" attitude. so i went from being happy with a used 97 328, to a new 323, then a used 528, then a used m3, then a used 540 (don't test drive unless you can afford) to a new 528.
went to the dealer today to order one but ended up with a 330i in the lot with most the options we wanted and best of all, no mark up on the msrp! once i get insurance tomorrow, all our hard work, savings, and patience will finally pay off with a brand new 330i. not only that, assuming m3-e46ers stay on their board, that means i can say "my car can beat up your car" with my fellow 330ers.
so, moral of the story, save money and stay away from here until you're ready.
side note on the steering complaints, a quote inspired by e39 board complaints on cup holders:
"i used to complain about my new steering until i saw a man with no 330"
vroom, vroom
