I had the rear differential replaced in my 1999 323i (auto) at 11,000 miles. I had a whining noise right at 65mph. It wasn't as bad as yours but my service department had no trouble identifying it. Good luck.

I had the same problem on my 2000 323Ci at around 9000 miles. No problem with service department who changed my rear differential. The whining noise was at 45 mph. This is in Sweden, and service people talked to BMW Sweden who claimed this was a problem they had seen on other cars.
