I think it's a great idea to use DRL or keep your regular low-beams on during the day, even when it's sunny out. (Actually, *especially* when it's sunny out--sometimes the shadows created by trees are so contrasty they can make other cars temporarily disappear from your vision--the DRL on such cars makes them more visible.)

I used to think it was hokey, but now I'm a firm believer. And personal experience confirms it for me: far fewer drivers pull out in front of me when I have my headlights on during the day. (And I have a red car--imagine the visibility improvement on a silver car!)

You could just turn your headlights on yourself, but you may often forget, and it puts more strain on the alternator than the DRL would.
