NEVER put car into reverse when facing uphill or gear when facing downhill.

Can you explain further? I thought they would be the same. Either gear for up or down is fine but 1st gear has a higher ratio and thus slightly better 'cause the engine would need to turn more to move the car the same distance as the reverse gear. The thing that is preventing the car from rolling is the engine compression isn't it?
