towing on a 323/328 (archive)

Does any one know the towing capacity of the 323/328? Local hitch company sells a hitch that is rated up to 2000 lbs. I hear that 3 series in Europe are used for towing small boats etc. Anybody have any experience towing with the 3 series or where I may get additional info? Thanks!
