I had my first semi bad experience with the step transmission the other day. I was on the freeway in manual mode going 50 in 5th gear, there was a lot of traffic as I was getting on the freeway, once in the lane I decided I needed to push it a bit because I was not at freeway speed. I happened to floor the gas, and the damn tranny downshifted into 2nd gear! The RPM's went briefly over 5k and I quickly shifted as I am still in the break-in period. Does anyone know why in the world this thing downshifted into 2nd in the speed I was at? Is this a problem??? Should I think about taking it in? Let me add that besides this bad experience the step has been flawless (knock on wood) and has been a wonder to drive.
One thing the manual says not to do in the break in period is to floor the gas, the auto tranny is desgined to down shift as low as it can go and not redline to give you the power you are asking it for. It worked just like it is supposed to. If you wanted to downshift to 4th, you could have, but don't blame the car for doing exactly what it was supposed to do. I don't know the max speeds of an E46 auto, but a stick can do 60 in 2nd.
That being said, I think the recommended break in period is a bunch of crap.
