I had my first semi bad experience with the step transmission the other day. I was on the freeway in manual mode going 50 in 5th gear, there was a lot of traffic as I was getting on the freeway, once in the lane I decided I needed to push it a bit because I was not at freeway speed. I happened to floor the gas, and the damn tranny downshifted into 2nd gear! The RPM's went briefly over 5k and I quickly shifted as I am still in the break-in period. Does anyone know why in the world this thing downshifted into 2nd in the speed I was at? Is this a problem??? Should I think about taking it in? Let me add that besides this bad experience the step has been flawless (knock on wood) and has been a wonder to drive.

Sounds to me like the tranny was just doing what it thought the engine wanted to do: REV! I wouldn't think any damage was done--going over 4500 rpm during break-in once in while isn't going to hurt anything (but that doesn't mean it's ok to red-line it all day long as soon as you have 1201+ miles on it!)

Also, you were in 5th gear when only doing 50? Hmmm...I have a stick, and have never driven a step, but I only use 5th gear when doing 65 or better. Its much better to rev these engines high than to lug (or under-rev) them.
