My "Service Engine Soon" light came on a couple of times and then my temp gauge pinned on hot less than five minutes after starting my car. I knew the engine did not have time to get that hot so I turned the engine off and started it again. The temp gauge went back to normal.

I took the car in and had a diagnostic done on it. It turns out that the themostats on the e46's and 528's have plastic and fiberglass. On coldstarts they break and send funny messages to the computer. BMW will replace the thermostat with an all metal one.
