I also live in Seattle and had the same concerns before getting my car that you apparently have - I wasn't sure whether I'd like them making decisions for me.

But after living with them in Seattle for 2 months, I've found I'm very satisfied with them. They take a little getting used to... you have to figure out which sensitivity setting matches your personality, but after you get used to them -- they're great. You can literally forget about all those little manual adjustments you used to make with regular intermittent wipers.
