I live in the (relatively dry) Sonoma Valley north of San Francisco. I agree they are remarkable in deciding when to wipe the windshield. Occasionally they'll take a few swipes when the glass is dry (but possiibly dirty).

I had to have my windshield replaced because of a stone chip that produced a crack. Insurance covered the entire cost.
