Our founding fathers developed the system as a compromise between election by Congress and election by popular vote. Each state has a number of electors assigned to it based on the number of Representatives in the House for that state, and one for each Senator (always 2). For most of our states, if the majority of the people in a particular state vote for one candidate, then all of that state's electors will vote for that candidate. The other couple of states split their electoral votes by districts.A full description of the process can be found at the link below:
And I also find it a bit hard to understand the system with "electors" (sorry, I know it's the wrong word - I just don't know the right word, so sorry), which will make the final decision - where did the right for the people go ???
