The diameter of the E46 manifolds were even smallest of all the BMW series...they were able to port and polish it, increasing it by more then 35%.

The mass air flow unit is also very restrictive.

Here's a question about the new 330 engine-

In an article from a recent issue of Bimmer Magazine, they stated that the majority of the HP gain for the new 3.0L engine came from redesigned air flow both intake and exhaust. I assume this means that the new 330 (and similarly '01 325s) have a different air intake and exhaust than earlier E46s? If this is true, does this leave much room for improvement to be had with an aftermarket cold-air intake and exhaust? Certainly more (and better) sound can be had but will there be much of a performance gain? We're seeing the factory release better and better OEM

designs that are making it more difficult for the aftermarket and tuners to advertise the "huge gains" that once were possible because of purposely-restrictive designs. Where are the weak links in the newest bimmers?

Any comments?
