Subaru's are great cars. I have a '98 Outback w/ the 2.5L "boxer" engine. Very reliable. The suspension is good too, and is tuned nicely for the AWD setup, making it an overall great-handling car.

But it just doesn't compare to my '00 323. The Subaru engine, even though it's a good one, gets kind of raspy at higher RPMs, whereas the BMW engine is as smooth as silk. You just can't compare the Subaru drivetrain to that of the BMW. If I had to drive the same car year-round, I would go for an AWD BMW, even though BMW is probably behind Subaru when it comes to AWD.
