The DSC light illuminates when you hit a bump because the sensor detects that one of the tires is turning at a different speed than the other wheels (that is the condition for slip, i.e. when you are going up a snowy hill at 10 mph and your rear wheels begin to spin at a rate commensurate with 30 mph. The difference in speed is detected and the car’s computer brakes the rear wheels to match (or nearly match) the speed of the front wheels). For a split second after your rear wheel hits the bump, it is pushed upward and momentarily loses contact with the road. If you are accelerating or braking when this occurs, the wheel either spins faster than the others (since it’s not touching the ground) or much slower (since the road isn’t keeping it spinning while you brake). The car’s computer interprets this as slip and adjusts the braking pressure to the affected wheel to bring it into line with the speed of the other wheels, in effect, eliminating the “slipping” condition. That’s when your DSC light lights. It’s not a defect – it’s a feature!

Hope this helped.

Regards,
DD.

I have a 2001 325i, and I keep DSC on all the time.

I have noticed 2 episodes where the DSC light came on
for 1 or 2 seconds when I was driving-- but it was in
situations where there was no unusual conditions... usually
I was driving around 20-30 mph but my wheels weren't
slipping or anything. Is this something that needs to
be looked at?
