Scratches show up best (worst) when ligting is relatively dark and there are spot lights that shine on the car. This dark/sporlight method is the test I use for preparing my cars for concours competition. Light scratches may not show up in bright sunlight or other lighting conditions.

My 2 month old sliver 325Ci has tiny scratches?! Last night when I was checking it out at this parking lot, I noticed fine straight scratches on my trunk lid! They are not deep, but they appear to be on the clear coat. The thing is, I can only see them under the light at that parking lot. I took my tiny BMW flashlight out of the glove compartment and shined it against the car, but I can't see the scratches.
I am extremely careful when washing my car. I have only washed it three times with those soft sheepskin (?) gloves that are so popular. I don't wipe the car in a circular patern, but rather a back and forth straight patern. I don't rub it hard either. So do I have scratches or is it some illusion from certain light sources?
