The E39 540i has recirculating ball while the E39 525i and 530i have rack-and-pinion steering systems.

The 540i is dead on center, but very communicative at high speed. You are isolated from the road feel with this type of rack.

The 525i and 530i have great steering feel, a lot like the old feel of the E36 3-series.

I personally like the 330i steering better.
