I was not really testing against other BMWs - but had some test drive on 323iT and 330i. XiT feel a bit firmer than regular suspention, though not as sport one - though maybe it is due to wheels. Wagon feels tigher in the rear. I stayed with 16 as I do drive a lot on pothole ridden mountain roads and occasionally on dirt roads (my 325XiT handled 15 miles on pure sand in desert perfectly - very fast and stable - better than many SUVs).. Excellent traction on ice and packed snow - I made an icy hill at Tahoe without a single slip, after watching Ford SUV struggling and slipping sideways. Though it is sure not a rock hopper..
Overall I am very happy with the handling.
No so with the clutch feel, but I would recommend manual anyway, even if you are not proficient at the moment.
Compared to Volvo XC, Passat 4motion V6 wagon and Outback (my other choices) it is by far best handling car. Compared to other BMWs - you get a bit slower in AWD on drag race - but you easily compensate that with excellent pull out of the corners and superior traction in bad conditions - just drive it in heavy rain - you feel it..
