Saw 3 BMW 5 series 1998, 1998, and 2000 at the BMW used lot with torn leaherette seats. On the 2000 vehicle the pastic tubing on the drivers bolster was noticeably worn. On the 1998 model there was a separation of the seam on the drivers bolster. In the other car the leatherette on the drivers seat was torn in several places most notibly on the upper seat and lower seat bolsters.
I will stick with leather. Although it may age worse it is certainly better than a torn seat. At least with the proper care the leather can remain soft and supple in the years ahead.
