Aftermarket HID bulbs, as you pointed out, includes the electronic ballast component. So if you retrofit your headlights with the correct parts, there is no differentiation between this and the "XENON" HID by thefactory. You will have 3200 lumen output, just like from the factory, and the efficiency and intensity will be identical. I've linked the page showing pictures of the components that an owner of a E39 5er recently did this to his car.

FYI: Halogens outputs 900-1200 lumens

If you opt to just swap out existing H7 bulbs w/
another one, including those in which the mfr claims as HID comparable, you still get the same lumen output as your existing halogens.
