I test drove one, it was pretty fast. Kinda floppy manual shifter, I had a hard time with the clutch too. I expect I could have gotten used to it.

Most of the VW-types seem to be suggesting the 1.8T these days. Less nose heavy with the lighter engine, and also more tunable with a chip. I'd look at the 1.8T really hard. VW is supposed to be coming out with a much better VR6 one of these days (aluminum block, 4 or 5 valves per cylinder, ULEV, etc.) The current VR6 is a bit dated, but it seems like a nice smooth engine.
