I had a 1995 GTI VR6. It was the previous body style and I loved the car. I never really had any problems with the car except for blowing 2 wheel bearing with-in a two and a half year period. I also live in NY and had an aftermarket suspension and Ultra low profile tires. I blame that for the problems with the bearing. The engine was flawless.

I can only image that the current style GTI/Jetta have only improved on what I was driving. Compared with my 330Ci, the handling is a little sloppy, but for your girlfriends needs and depending the car she was driving I think she'd be more than happy.

One warning, I've heard a lot of complaints from people about quality of the car not being what it was and minor problems with the sunroof and other trim pieces. You may want to check that out. Finally, Does she really need the VR6? You may want to look into a 1.8T. I loved the VR6, but the 1.8T is a great car and the handling is better because there is less weight in the front.

Good luck
