My girlfriend is thinking about getting a Jetta GLS VR6 sport pack that comes with 17in wheels. Anybody have any experience with these cars. MSPR about 22-25k for VR6 which is the 6 cylinder model. Thanks for any help.

Recently test drove a GTI GLX VR6 and was really impressed, especially given the price $9kCAD below the 325i's. Cable shifter isn't top notch but it worked OK, even on quick shifts. Superb clutch: glass smooth and immediately familiar feeling. VR6 engine really hustles the 3000lb car and is quiet and refined doing it. Interior well finished and equipped, except it uses a tape player instead of a CD. Seats too small to be really comfortable (cushion too short.) VW's 5-speed transmission infamous for grinding 2nd gear. Brakes were a bit grabby. Felt well planted on the highway and cruised really well (better than the A4QM IMHO.) I've heard rumours that the VR6 engine has a design problem but I can't substantiate it. VW gives a 10-year 100000mi. powertrain warranty in the US (and stiffs Canadians with a 5-year one.) VW parts famously expensive. Build quality looks good to the eye but the tester I drove had a loud and nonstop squeak deep in the dash as well as a rattle from the rear hatch area. Consumer Reports claim the Jetta's quality has deteriorated and they don't recommend it anymore. Don't know about other VW's. By all means check http://www.vwvortex.com/ ...
