One of the most common problems afflicting the 323 and 328 models is thermostat failure. Mine failed yesterday morning at about 12,600 miles.

This first picture is of the type that is failing. However, this particular thermostat is new. The part number is 11 53 1 437 040. Notice how close the metal “wings” of the thermostat core are to the top of the two plastic posts that hold the core in place.

This second picture is of the failed thermostat from my 2000 328. Notice that the core is no longer connected to the two plastic posts as the tips of the two posts broke off. When this happens the thermostat typically “sticks” in the open position and the engine will not get up to normal operating temperature. In cold weather some people may first notice the problem as lack of warm air from the heater.

The replacement thermostat has a different design and has part number 11 53 7 509 227.

Hope this helps you understand the problem.
