I've been driving for BMWs for the last ten years and always drop into first (always manual boxes) when the low speed warrants it.
Means I can pull away at junctions without stopping, whilst accelerating hard, but at the same time having come down to a reasonable enough speed that allows me to check for oncoming traffic.
As far as I can tell, that's how many UK drivers drive too, and the way I was taught too.
Bottom line? The box on my current four year old 323i SE is smooth through all gears, up and down. No clunky transmissions or undue noises or vibrations. As far as I can tell it's done it no harm and probably a lot of good, driving this way.
Now, as for the Steptronic transmission, I don't know. Is there some technical reason why the same practice would hurt there? Going to need to know, I guess, since that's what I'm getting next.
