I have been drive manual BMW's for 11 yrs. If I really need 1st I will change into it. ie slowing down quickly! Or when coming to a stop on a slope.

Just like any gear do not change into 1st if it will make the engine rev in the red!

I hate costing in 2nd at really low revs, or putting the clutch in at low revs in 2nd..
