Not since the days of Harly Earl has America led in automotive engineering. I work with these guys every day at SAE, so we get to hear what's going on regularly.

Chrysler is almost totally beholden to Daimler for engineering.

Ford engineering is in a flux, with the premier group still focused on 'world-wide' standardization under a mix of former BMW leadership and the older guys from Hank Nickol's era.

And, it's totally laughable to point to any division of GM to look for automotive design engineering leadership. GM has systematically driven its design engineers out ---- and now relies mainly on its European units to lead design engineering. The Americans get to focus on Production Engineering. (ie the engineering behind production flow in assembly plants.)
