(hold off on the flames, please!)

i, too, am a new BMW driver. just to let you know where i'm coming from, i've driven two buicks before this (84 regal, 88 century) which you know is over-boosted steering defined.

now, the steering was light enough at slow speeds but it felt really solid; there was no play there. when i turned the steering wheel, the car wheels turned right away, but it doesn't take a bodybuilder to do it. i like that.

at high speeds, the steering (i felt) tightened up a bit and it's pretty stable. i don't know if the old BMWs let you drive on the autobahn/freeway with no hands on the wheel (i.e. stiff steering), but i did have to adjust every few seconds to keep the car pointed straight, but i wasn't "gripping" the steering wheel like you said. not at all. i was driving with just one hand on the wheel, going an average of 85-90mph for hours at a time, for almost 1000 miles. felt solid to me and there was no play in the steering wheel at those speeds (unlike on buicks).

so no complaints from me here. my car was made january, 2001 by the way, if that makes any difference.
