Why would you be surprised? Do I have an obligation to personally attempt all the things that are recommended here on bimmer.org before arguing against them?

That being said, I went out at lunch and DID loosen my gas cap before starting the car. In three miles, the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light did not go on in my 330i, providing yet FURTHER evidence that the gas cap theory is an urban legend.
